What is autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), hereafter referred to as Autism (which includes the previously used Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified [PDD-NOS]), is a complex, lifelong developmental disability that typically appears during early childhood and can influence a person’s needs around social interaction, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. It can also be associated with an increased ability to recognize patterns and an increased sensitivity to justice or fairness. The Autistic experience is different for everyone. It is often associated with a number of characteristics referred to as a “spectrum” in that each person may have different strengths and support needs.
Autistic people often have Autistic family members and may be drawn to seek out other Autistic people as friends and romantic partners. Because of this, Autistic traits are not always easily recognizable. However, early diagnosis can help a person to receive the resources and support they need to live fully.
