Wildlife Safari (Winston)
May 7, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Wildlife Safari will celebrate over 35 years of outreach to the disabled community this year as they celebrate their annual Day of Discovery. This life-changing event will be held on Monday, May 7th from 10:00am- 3:00pm in the Safari Village.
“Day of Discovery is probably one of the most important events we throw at the park,” explains the Safari’s executive director, Dan Van Slyke, “we set up community homes, schools and other places working with families who may have a special need to come to the park- for free- and enjoy a day of peaceful visits with the animals here.”
Wildlife Safari staff will be working hard to facilitate a connection between each guest and the animals at the park throughout the day. The Safari Village will be decked out in special education tables, animal talks, cheetah appearances and more, while each registered group will receive free admission to the Safari Drive Through. Participants will also receive free train rides throughout the day.
“The event is organized to provide a stress-free or minimal-stress day to families and groups facing the unique challenges highlighted by disabilities and allow groups to escape to the zoo and be surrounded by people who understand those challenges,” explains Jacob Schlueter, the park’s marketing director, “we have an incredibly dedicated and compassionate staff who help to throw this event and they are excited each year to truly connect people with nature in every way possible.”
“On the Day of Discovery, when we look around, we see other families like ourselves.” explains a past participant, “Our son looks and acts the same as everyone else, no one is pointing and staring, it’s a very special day to just feel normal.”
