SUMMARY:Support and Discussion Group for Autistic Adults Thursday Edition\, age 18+ (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Autism Society of Oregon \n(Online) Support and Discussion Group for Autistic Adults – Thursday Edition\, age 18 + Meets online every Thursday\, from 5:30pm – 7:00pm. \nThe purpose of this group is to cultivate a safe\, affirming space to process and discuss what it’s like to be autistic in the world. \nWe will be reviewing books\, talking about neurodiversity\, and openly talking about life on the spectrum in general. \nThe group is facilitated by Lisa Sawyer\, an Autistic adult and a peer. Lisa is an active volunteer in the community\, having worked many years in homeless services and peer support for adults. In this group\, we strive to foster connection\, have open dialogue in all areas that challenge and support us\, making this a shared journey – never a solo one – in a safe and welcoming community. \nRegister for the Thursday group at the LINK HERE. \nFor more information contact Lori Ball at LoriB@autismsocietyoregon.org or 503-636-1676. \nThese support groups are intended to create a safe environment for Autistic adults\, whether formally diagnosed or not. If you do not identify as Autistic\, kindly do not join this group. \nDue to the popularity of the Thursday night group\, we’ve opened a version that meets as a separate group on Wednesday afternoons. Registration for the Wednesday  group can be found at the LINK HERE.

SUMMARY:Daylight Saving Time - Spring Forward
DESCRIPTION:GET READY to “Spring Forward” 1 hour on this Sunday\, Mar 8\, at 2:00 AM clocks are turned forward 1 hour to 3:00 AM! \nTips for Managing the Time Change: \nIt is easy to forget. For starters\, it is easy to miss Daylight Saving Time entirely. This is true for anyone\, but especially someone who might have difficulty with executive function\, like an Autistic person. If you forget to set your clock forward when everyone else does\, you could be more likely to miss your appointments by being an hour late. \nWhen we set the clocks forward\, not only does the sun set later\, but it rises later too. This can mess with our circadian rhythms\, and might make it harder to get to sleep. \nHow to Make the Adjustment Easier \nExplain what Daylight Saving Time is and why it exists if the concept confuses or annoys your Autistic child. Explain its history if they are not familiar with it. Tell them it is perfectly okay to find it illogical\, but explain that they have to keep up with the time changes so they do not disrupt school and appointments. \nMark it on the calendar. Missing the time change or only realizing it is happening the day of can be destabilizing\, and even lead to a meltdown. Prevent this problem by clearly marking the time change on the calendar and setting automatic reminders. \nBlock out evening sun. If the sun setting an hour later is causing you or your Autistic loved one to miss out on crucial sleep\, try using blackout curtains.
