SUMMARY:Archetypes of Poor Sleep in Autism (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jake Michaelson is a Roy J. Carver associate professor in psychiatry and neuroscience and the division director of computational and molecular psychiatry at the University of Iowa. His lab uses advanced computational approaches to study the effect of genetic variations on the development of the brain\, with specific applications in autism and language impairment. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in biological engineering at Utah State University before earning his PhD in computational biology at the Technische Universitat Dresden in Germany in 2010. After his time in Germany\, he joined the lab of psychiatric geneticist Jonathan Sebat at UC San Diego\, where he completed his postdoctoral training and published several of the earliest papers dealing with whole genome sequencing in autism. In 2013 he joined the faculty at the University of Iowa\, and his current research is supported by NIMH\, NIDCD\, the Simons Foundation\, and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation.

SUMMARY:Language Development: What we have learned from comparisons between ASD and fragile X syndrome
DESCRIPTION:Angela Thurman\, PhD \nMIND Institute at UC Davis \nDr. Thurman’s research at the UC Davis MIND Institute focuses on characterizing the dynamic processes underlying the development of language and other skills in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders\, particularly autism spectrum disorder\, Down syndrome\, fragile X syndrome and Williams syndrome. Because development stems from a continuous interplay of multiple influences across time\, unpacking the influences of the behavioral phenotypes (areas of strength and challenge) in neurodevelopmental disorders provides insight into the factors supporting and impeding development and how this differs across neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Thurman’s current projects are focused on characterizing developmental similarities and differences across different neurodevelopmental disorders and identifying the factors influencing child development. She is also interested in the development and validation of new methods for measuring cognitive\, emotional\, and behavioral skills across the lifespan in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. The long- range goal is that this work will help identify the extent to which similar and/or different processes should be targeted in intervention efforts across neurodevelopmental disorders. \n\n\n\n\n\nLive stream & past recordings: http://bit.ly/ORCASeminars2019 \nSeminar Contact: Eric Fombonne\, M.D.\nProfessor of Psychiatry\nDirector of Autism Research\, Institute for Development & Disability

SUMMARY:OHSU Autism Seminar Series Presents: “Autism during early childhood: Advancing methods to quantify clinical phenotypes and outcomes”
DESCRIPTION:OHSU Autism Seminar Series Presents: \n“Autism during early childhood: Advancing methods to quantify clinical phenotypes and outcomes” \nSo Hyun “Sophy” Kim\, Ph.D. \nAssistant Professor\, Center for Autism and the Developing Brain\, Weill Cornell Medicine \nDr. So Hyun “Sophy” Kim is a clinical researcher with an extensive background in identification of early behavioral phenotypes and examining developmental trajectories of children with ASD. Dr. Kim received a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from University of Michigan and completed postdoctoral training at Yale University Child Study Center. Currently\, she is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain (CADB) at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Kim has led the development of the new treatment outcome measure for ASD\, the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) as well as a new language measure\, the Observation of Spontaneous Expressive Language (OSEL)\, in collaboration with Dr. Catherine Lord. Currently\, she is a PI of a NIMH funded project designed to examine the mechanisms of early\, parent-mediated interventions for toddlers with ASD. Most recently\, Dr. Kim has led efforts to examine school readiness in kindergarteners with ASD while integrating behavioral and electrophysiological (ERP/EEG) methods\, with a particular focus on executive function. \n  \nLive stream & past recordings: http://bit.ly/ORCASeminars2019
