This free workshop is intended for educators, caregivers and providers who serve Latino/Spanish speaking families in their practices, clinics, schools and community programs.

Workshops include: 

Panel Discussion:   Local Latino parents express the joys and struggles of raising children with special needs and answer audience questions.  Facilitated by Tomas Monter-Rangel,  JC EI/ECSE 

Mexican Culture and Disability  Speaker  Alejandra Moreno, MS of Jackson County Mental Health will discuss disability and the Mexican culture including common beliefs and practices related to illness and ways to better understand what role they play in everyday lives. 

Keynote:  Strategies for Engaging Latino Families and Creating Culturally Appropriate Interventions.   Speakers  Dr. Sandra Magaña PhD in Disabilities Studies. Professor  University of Illinois Chicago and Dr. Wendy Machilicek  PhD, Assoc. Professor University of Oregon  

Dr Magaña and Dr. Machilicek will review research on children with Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) and behavioral interventions with a focus on how to engage low-income families in parent-mediated interventions.   In this interactive workshop the presenters will review:

  • ·       A parent education intervention for Latino families of children who experience ASD
  • ·       A cultural framework for adapting and creating culturally appropriate interventions.
  • ·       Applying the cultural framework to different contexts.
